UNIT 13: Medieval Spain

OBJECTIVES:
  1. To associate the beginning of the Middle Ages with the fall of the Roman Empire.
  2. To name the Germanic tribes which invaded Hispania: the Vandals, Alans, Suevi and Visigoths.
  3. To learn that the Visigoths established a kingdom in Hispania, and Toledo was the capital.
  4. To link the Visigoth kings with the unification of the territory, religion and laws throughout the peninsula.
  5. To know that the Muslim invaded the peninsula in the year 711 and called it Al Andalus.
  6. To understand what taifa kingdoms were.
  7. To recognise the four kingdoms the Christian territory was divided into around 1230.
  8. To learn that the Catholic Kings conquered Granada, the last Muslim kingdom, in 1492.

UNIT 12: Prehistory and Antiquity

OBJECTIVES:
  1. To understand that Prehistory is the period extending from the time the first human beings appeared up to the invention of writing.
  2. To learn the characteristics of the two periods of Prehistory.
  3. To describe how men and women lived in Prehistory.
  4. To associate the bedinnings of history with the invention of writing.
  5. To learn about the ancient civilisations which inhabited the Iberian Peninsula in Antiquity.
  6. To explain the Roman conquest of the peninsula and divisions of Hispania.
  7. To appreciate the history of Spain.

Unit 11: The economy

OBJECTIVES:
  1. To define: active and inactive population; primary, secondary and tertiary sectors; domestic and foreing trade.
  2. To identify the activities involved in the three economic sectors.
  3. To explain the distribution of population in Spain by economic sectors.
  4. To study the primary sector.
  5. To examine the secondary sector.
  6. To describe the tertiary sector and distinguish between trade, transport, tourism, financial services and public services.
  7. To interpret maps, graphs, diagrams and photos.
  8. To recognise the importance of being a responsible consumer.

UNIT 10: Population

OBJECTIVES:
  1. To define absolute population, natural increase, population density and migration.
  2. To distinguish between the urban and rural populations.
  3. To understand why the population is not evenly distributed.
  4. To classify the population into groups according to gender and age.
  5. To identify the basic reasons for migration.
  6. To learn the different types of migration.
  7. To identify the basic characteristic of the Spanish population.
  8. To interpret photos, maps, diagrams and graphs.
  9. To appreciate the cultural diversity provided by people from other places.

UNIT 9: Rivers, climate and vegetation

OBJECTIVES:
  1. To define "river" and distinguish three of its elements.
  2. To learn the different forms of water found on the Earth's surface.
  3. To identify the main rivers in the students' Autonomous Community and their characteristics.
  4. To explain the difference between climate and weather.
  5. To identify the world's climatic zones.
  6. To describe the types of climates of Spain.
  7. To learn about the climate, vegetation and fauna in the student´s Autonomous Community.
  8. To reflect on excessive or irresponsible consumption of water.

OBJECTIVES:
  1. To define the term "landscape".
  2. To realise that mountains and plains are landscapes.
  3. To learn about the landscapes of Spain.
  4. To identify landscapes in different Autonomous Communities.

  6. To distinguish the different types of coasts and coastal landforms.
  7. To learn the characteristics of the coasts of Spain.

  3. To distinguish between pure substances and mixtures.

  6. To learn the principal changes of state in matter.

  8. To appreciate the importance of recycling.

OBJECTIVES:
  • To learn what nutrients are and know the three main types.
  • To be aware of some guidelines to help maintain a healthy diet.
  • To describe how the three phases of the digestive process work: digestion, absorption of nutrients and elimination of waste.
  • To understand how respiration and excretion work and know the organs which take part in these processes.
  • To explain blood circulation and distinguish between pulmonary circulation and systemic circulation.
  • To appreciate the importance of basic principles of food safety.
